Painting Concrete Garage Floors Guidelines

February 20, 2010

Here are some basic guidelines for painting your concrete garage floor using epoxy. Painting your garage floor with epoxy paint will help keep it free of stains and deterioration, and give your garage floor a tough finish for a showroom look. Whether you use an oil-based (we don’t recommend) or epoxy floor paint seal as the top coat is up to you. We recommend using an epoxy paint as your concrete floor coating sealant.

  • Be Sure Garage are is well ventilated – wear eye protection & gloves
  • Clean the Concrete Floor – use 3-1 water to bleach, spray on & let soak, use stiff bristle brush to scrub, rinse again once done/ tough stains use pressure wash
  • Repair the Cracks
  • Etch the Surface – may need to etch the surface, a process that opens the pores of the concrete surface so that the paint can be absorbed better. A properly prepared surface will have a texture roughly similar to medium-grit sandpaper.
  • Apply the Primer – A good primer coat is the key to a long-lasting paint job. Allow the primer to dry for at least 8 hours before applying the paint top-coat.
  • Apply the first Coat of Paint – Allow the first coat to dry for about 24 hours before deciding whether you want to apply a second coat.
